Registration underway for 2005 Washington Recreation Department Summer Programs (May 6, 2005)

Looking for some summer fun for a vacationing youngster? The City of Washington Parks and Recreation Department will offer an array of activities through its 2005 Summer Program.

Registration for recreation summer programs will be held May 2-13 for City of Washington residents and May 9-13 for all participants. Program dates are June 13-July 22, unless otherwise noted.

The registration fee is $10 for city residents and $60 for non-residents, plus an activity fee for each program, as noted. Camps require payment of the camp fee only. Cash, check or credit cards are accepted. Participants must be the required age as of Oct. 16, 2005, unless otherwise stated. A birth certificate is required for proof of age for first-time participants.

Register for the camps or any of the following programs at the Recreation Office, 310 W. Main St., Suite 200, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Space is limited. For more information, call the Recreation Office at 252-975-9367, ext. 221 or email klhardison@washingtonnc.ws.

The Recreation Department is not offering arts and crafts or tennis lessons this summer. Parents interested in signing children up for these activities should contact Beaufort County Arts Council, 252-946-2504, or Washington Racquet Club, 252-946-2582.

Summer Programs

  • Tot Lot (ages 4-6). $20. Featuring arts and crafts, trips and games. Tuesday/Thursday or Wednesday/Friday, 9 a.m.-12 noon, Seventh Street Recreation Center. Four sessions offered: Session 1, June 21-24; Session 2, June 28-July 1; Session 3, July 5-8; Session 4, July 12-15.
  • Kayaking (ages 9-18). $25. West End Stewart Parkway. Conducted by Wilderness Adventures. Wednesdays at 8:30-9:30 a.m., 9:45-10:45 a.m. or 11 a.m.-12 noon.
    Sailing Classes (ages 14-18). $25. Carolina Winds at Havens Wharf. Conducted by EC Sailing School. Thursday at 8:30-10 a.m. or 1-2:30 p.m. Recommended to bring life jacket.
  • Kiddie Cookin’ (ages 8-12, girls and boys). $15. Peterson Building. Monday or Friday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
  • Tae Kwon Do (ages 5-18). $30. Seventh Street Recreation Center. Tuesday and Thursday, 6:30-7:30 p.m.
  • Beginner Golf (ages 9-12). $10. Terrapin Track Golf Course. Time and date to be announced. Recommended to bring you own clubs.
  • Preschool Swim Lessons (ages 3-5). $20. Moore Aquatic & Fitness Center. Eight-lesson sessions run Monday-Thursday at 9-9:30 a.m. or 9:30-10 a.m. Three sessions offered: Session 1, June 13-23; Session 2, June 27-30 and July 5-8 (Friday class due to July 4 holiday); Session 3: July 11-21.
  • Beginner Swimming Lessons (ages 5 and up. Must have completed kindergarten). $20. Moore Aquatic & Fitness Center. Eight-lesson sessions run Monday-Thursday at 8-9 a.m. or 6-7 p.m. Three sessions offered: Session 1, June 13-23; Session 2, June 27-30 and July 5-8 (Friday class due to July 4th holiday); Session 3, July 11-21.

Summer Camps

  • Kid Kazoo Camp. $65. Seventh Street Recreation Center. Featuring arts and crafts, games, movies and trips. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Ages 7-9: June 27-July 1 or July 5-8. Ages 10-12: July 11-15 or July 18-22.
  • Shoestring Theater (rising 4th through rising 7th graders). $50. Washington Civic Center. Directed by Joey Toler, Beaufort County Arts Council. June 13-24, 1-5 p.m. Perform June 24, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
  • ECU Basketball Camp (ages 8-18). $50. Seventh Street Recreation Center. Co-sponsored by Juvenile Crime Prevention Council, July 18-22, 9 a.m.-12 noon.
  • Soccer Camp (ages 5 and up). $50. Washington High School. Time and dates to be announced.
